Prison Fellowship hosts Public Seminar on Crime and Social Change
Prison Fellowship Nigeria is to host a public seminar on the theme, “the church, crime, punishment and social change” at the International Conference Centre, Abuja on May 21, 2009 at 9.00am.
The seminar, whose keynote address will be delivered by Vice President Goodluck Jonathan, GCON, is designed to examine the incidence of recidivism and its grave implications for security of lives and property. This is with a view to x-raying social attitudes to ex-convicts in order to ease their re-entry and reintegration back to meaningful socio-economic preoccupation.
The President of Prison Fellowship International, Mr. Ron Nikel, is expected to address the seminar which will be chaired by the President Christian Association of Nigeria, Archbishop John Onaiyekan. Other speakers include Prof. C.K. Agomo, former Dean of Law, University of Lagos and Archbishop Sam Amaga, Chancellor, Salem University.
Prison Fellowship collaborates with key Agencies to empower prison inmates
Prison Fellowship Nigeria, in furtherance of its welfare and after sentence rehabilitation and reintegration concern for prison inmates, is collaborating with key agencies to empower inmates for productive life after discharge. This is also a strategy to reduce crime and social insecurity.
The programme, known as the Life Recovery Pre-release Empowerment Programme a.k.a. ”The Onesimus Project” is being run in partnership with three other organizations. These include the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), who are the technical partners and the Nigerian Prison Service, the programme host. The third partner is the Covenant University, Ota, Nigeria.
A memorandum of understanding was signed to commence the programme on 22 April 2009 at Abuja between Prison Fellowship and the Chief executive officers of the organizations.
Onesimus Project is a crime curtailment and human capital development tool through mentoring, psychoanalytical guidance and counseling, entrepreneurial and vocational training of prison inmates with six months or less to the end of their sentence. The objective is to aid their re-entry, rehabilitation and re-integration into productive socio-economic life and thereby reduce recidivism and improve security of lives and property.
